The broad objective of WAHALA Publishing House is to publish and distribute books, and other materials in print and other media for educational purposes to empower Liberians through literacy, nurturing citizenship, skills  development and through enlivening a reading, informed and knowledge–seeking Liberia.

WHY WAHALA PUBLISHING HOUSE?

The development of post-conflict Liberia requires sustained efforts to strengthen national identity and reconciliation and to accelerate the development of technical, vocational and other skills related to human development. WAHALA Publishing House seeks to contribute to these efforts, especially as articulated in several Liberian national development plans and the SDGs. The teaching of culture-sensitive literature, history that unifies, a new kind of civics that supports skills training for national development and an increased sense of personal, community and national efficacy are critical elements of WAHALA’s initiative.

WHY “WAHALA?”

Wahala is a common expression used throughout West Africa. While its meaning may vary slightly from country to country, from sub-culture to sub-culture, it generally connotes an argument, a predicament, looming trouble or a contested situation. In Liberia, Wahala means an argument. We draw upon this term to signify the need for inquiry and for contestation that will drive national development. It connotes our determination to stimulate informed discourse as the pathway to discovery and development. And so we deploy this expression as our logo symbolizing our desire to encourage and promote productive discourse and contestation as a basis for generating knowledge, enhancing understandings and promoting development and strengthening a sense of common citizenship.
